Chambers Accountants was founded 12 years ago with one focus: supporting self-employed barristers in the North of England with the tax and accounting expertise their work actually needs. It's a niche most general practices don't understand well — the fee structures, the chambers admin systems, the irregular income — and it's the only niche we work in.

Where our expertise comes from
Our lead accountant spent eight years as Finance Director inside a barristers' chambers. We know how chambers fee reports work, understand the types of cases and funding, along with typical expenditure. We've developed a way of working that fits into your day — shaped by real experience of what it's like inside chambers. That background, combined with qualifications as a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser, shapes how the whole firm approaches barristers' affairs: practical, well-informed, and built around how you actually work.
Because we specialise, we can react quickly to changes like shifts in Legal Aid and contingency funding — helping you understand what it means for you. We also understand pupillage, know the costs barristers typically incur, and use an evolving year-end checklist, so you can be confident nothing's been overlooked.

Tax rules for the self-employed don't stand still, and barristers are often affected differently to other businesses. We track government consultations that affect our clients, and where it matters, we make representations. Recent examples include the move to the cash basis, and the more recent proposals around regular in-year tax payments for the self-employed.

Jenny
Jenny is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser. She spent eight years as Finance Director inside a barristers' chambers, alongside founding and building this firm 12 years ago — experience that continues to shape how the whole team approaches barristers' tax and accounts today.
Kirsty
Kirsty is ICB Level 3 qualified and has been with the firm for 8 years, known for her precision and reliability. She's our systems expert, certified in both Dext and QuickBooks, and works closely with her allocated clients throughout the year — keeping on top of quarterly VAT, bookkeeping, and the small details that make year-end straightforward.
Over the years, she's developed a detailed understanding of chambers fee income and how it works, and has strong working relationships with accounts teams at chambers across the region.
Hamza
Hamza is AAT qualified and working towards Level 3. He's a meticulous, reliable bookkeeper, handling day-to-day bookkeeping and quarterly VAT for his clients with real attention to detail.
He's also developing a specialism in property accounts, supporting barristers who are landlords alongside their practice.
