How we work with you
A simple process, built specifically around how barristers work.
Your day-to-day
Snap a photo of your receipts and costs using Dext — a simple app that lets you photograph expenses like parking or fuel on the go — and send it to us. On a day-to-day basis, that's you done.
Where possible, chambers sends us your income and contributions or rent directly. Every VAT quarter, we ask you for your business bank records to tie back to the payment summary, along with any additional expenses not already in Dext.
Behind the scenes, we use QuickBooks to keep everything organised — but you'll never need to log in or touch it yourself; we handle it all. Then we take care of VAT, MTD ITSA, and year-end accounts — done.
Tell us once
Say we spot a cost at year-end that hasn't been claimed. We'll add it to your accounts, reclaim the VAT, and carry it forward into our checklist for next quarter — so it's picked up and dealt with, without you having to raise it again. No repetitive questions. No chasing. No re-explaining your situation, thanks to how we communicate as a team.
Beyond the basics
Rental property and capital gains, tax-efficient pension planning alongside your financial adviser, and support if you're considering incorporating — including the Bar Standards Board entity application.
Forecasting
Barrister income rarely comes in evenly — some months are strong, some are thin, and year-on-year totals can swing significantly. As a paid add-on, we build a range of income and tax estimates alongside your tax return, then revisit and refresh them with you in February or March — in time to discuss pension contribution timing with your financial adviser for maximum tax efficiency.
The tools we use
We use Dext to make photographing and submitting receipts quick and easy — the only app you'll need to use day-to-day. Behind the scenes, we manage your accounts through QuickBooks, but you'll never need to log in or touch it yourself; we handle the technical side so you don't have to.
Fees
Fees are payable by simple monthly direct debit — predictable and spread across the year, with no large lump sum at tax time.
